Running ever further

all-hail-the-undead-lord:

his feet hit the cold water like rocks, though he could not feel it. no, he could not feel anything. he was not cold, nor was he uncomfortable. he ran none the less however, due to the inconvenience of the ones chasing him it was needed. he ran until they dared not follow him into the icy bog. he moved over the rotting water and under the leafless trees. he looked about, his eyes dark even though they glowed blue. a stick broke and he stood tall, looking about.

His head turned quickly, him only pausing a moment to look behind him before continuing to run as he heard the villagers not that far behind. He could smell the smoke from the torches they were holding, he could hear the names they were calling him. He could even hear their footsteps hitting the ground. He looked down at his hand, seeing the new tissue that now covered his fingers. His feet continued to hit the ground until he stopped, staring at the opening to a large forest that now stood in front of him, large trees shooting up to touch the moon. The villagers screams and yells were getting louder, but he couldn’t help but grin at the sight before him, his glowing eyes shinning in the moon light as he started to stalk into the forest.

“Oh Gwendolyn!”
She ran, giggling with a big smile on her face as her bare feet hit the cold leaves of the forest floor. She stumbled, breathlessly hugging a large tree before putting her back to it, tucking her thin arms in so she was hidden by the large trunk. She put one of her hands over her mouth to stifle her giggles, her hand thin, but her fingers rather long, having an assortment of rings on them.
“I know you’re here!” Her brother’s voice echoed through the woods in a taunting tone, her trying to hold her breath as she heard his footsteps cracking the dried leaves and small twigs.
“Gotcha!” Her brother’s hand reached over the side of the tree, her squealing as she ducked away from it and sprinted forward, running as fast as she could.
“Gwendolyn, wait up!!”
“Catch me, Edwin!” She turned her head and called, her blue eyes glittering in the moon light. She turned her head back around, the wind blowing through her black pixie like hair as she continued to speed across the forest, having no trouble jumping over stones and large tree roots. Although she was the shortest and smallest elf in the royal family, she was the fastest runner out of all of the elves in her fathers forest. She let out a loud laugh, starting to slow down. She turned her head to look behind her, her earrings that hung from her pointy ears twinkling as they touched her neck lightly.
“Gwendolyn…w-wait…wait up,” her brother said, gasping in breath as he walked over to her. She leaned against a tree, crossing her arms and raising her eyebrow.

“How do you expect to ever get Tillie to like you if you can’t even run longer than thirty seconds?” she asked, a grin spreading across her face as she saw Edwin’s cheeks turn bright red.
“I don’t like her!” he said, his small foot stomping against the ground. Gwendolyn laughed, letting her head lean against the tree she was leaning on, looking at her brother with soft eyes.
The late night runs they did through the forest was the only time they could ever get a break from having to act a certain way under their fathers rules. It was always so proper.
Gwendolyn jumped as she heard a loud scream, her turning her head behind her in the direction it came from.
“Hurry!” Edwin gasped, both of them turning to the first tree they could find that had tree branches they could climb. Gwendolyn climbed ahead, helping her slower brother up on the high tree branch as they watched the forest below them. A large group of humans arrived below them, turning all ways, seeming to be searching for something they had lost. The man in front pointed in a direction, turning back and yelling at the other men that were behind him. They all cheered, and the group started to go forward. Just as they left, something stepped out of the shadows of a nearby tree, and the sight that was before Gwendolyn and Edwin sent cold chills up their spine. Below them, just a few tree branches away, was a man. The man however, wasn’t even a full man. He was a….skeleton. A skeleton covered in meat and muscle that seemed to be simply hanging off of his bones. He let out a noise that made Edwin whine quietly, Gwendolyn quickly covering his mouth. The creature underneath them turned his head to the side slightly, almost like he was listening, before he started to walk forward. As soon as he was out of sight, Gwendolyn let her hand drop from her brothers mouth, his eyes wide as he turned and looked at her.
“Did you see that?” he whispered, swallowing the lump in his throat.
“I saw it…” Gwendolyn said softly, her eyes still looking in the direction of the skeleton man.
“I…I think we should go home now, Gwen.” Edwin said to her, grabbing her arm gently.
“No,” Gwendolyn said, tugging her arm away. “I’m going after him,” she said simply, before jumping out of the tree, landing on the forest floor with almost no sound.
“Gwen, no!” Edwin hissed from the top of the tree.
“Go home then, Ed!” Gwen said, looking up at him before turning and running into the direction that the man went. Ed groaned, his eyes filled with fear as he started to climb down from the tree, taking in a deep breath as he hit the forest floor. He felt a feeling rise from his stomach to the top of his throat, knowing that something very bad was about to happen.
